About this artwork

Flames do not only consume flesh but also transform the earthly into a symbol of eternity. In this blazing vortex, Joan of Arc is captured—a heroine, a saint, betrayed and condemned. Her face remains unshaken, as if she has already left this world, accepting her fate. Her delicate fingers are folded in a prayer-like gesture, yet at the same time, they resemble crossed swords—a sign of her resilience.

The background is painted in fiery tones, immersing the viewer in the moment of execution, where time seems frozen. The faceless crowd, indistinct and ominous, stands as silent witnesses to history’s verdict. The outlines of medieval architecture dissolve into the flames, reinforcing the inevitability of her path.

On the left, lilies stretch upward—symbols of purity and the emblem of the French crown. Here, they appear almost like flames themselves, burning alongside the saint. They echo her transformation from a warrior into a legend, from a mortal into an eternal symbol.

This painting is not just a depiction of tragedy but also of triumph—where flesh succumbs to fire, but spirit transcends time.
